[ EEPI-Discuss ] Re: Why are movie theatre revenues declining?
1) Social factors eroding theater environment (talking, cell phones, babies crying, etc.); 2) Sacrificing long term relationships with theater goers for the increase in short term profitability (commercials, no ushers, etc.); 3) Higher quality experience elsewhere (Home theater); 4) Declining quality of mainstream movies; 5) Easily available "Long Tail" content alternatives (Netflix, Amazon). I would also add: 6) Small screens. Many theatre screens aren't much larger than your TV. 7) Short window of availability. If you don't get there in the first week or so, it's already gone. So one or two conflicts and you have to wait for the DVD. 8) DVDs (and other forms) out so fast. It has been six months and is moving to much shorter times. Why bother going to the threatre when you can have it on DVD before the buzz dies down? 9) Economics. My choices: 2 tickets ($6-$8 each, say $7 each) 2 popcorn ($2.75 each for small) 2 pop ($2.75 each for small) -------- $25 and put up with #1, #2, and #6. Instead, you can buy the DVD for $20 and watch it more than once. Even if the movie is bad, you're still out less than the theatre price.
