Negotiators Aim For Lawsuit-Free E-Music Marketplace

As the Supreme Court <http://www.supremecourtus.gov/> nears a decision
in the most important copyright case in 20 years, negotiations on how to
establish a legitimate, lawsuit-free online music marketplace are occurring
in the nation's capital. The talks are expected to result later this year
in a bill from a House subcommittee that aims to clarify the rules on online
music licensing.
The bill, which would be offered by House Judiciary Courts, the
Internet and Intellectual Property Subcommittee Chairman Lamar Smith,
R-Texas, would change the laws so innovative music services could license a
broader range of music to consumers through various media.

California, called a "bold" proposal. It calls for abolishing compulsory
licenses and establishing one-stop music rights organizations, among other
