PSP Exploit Saga
Regarding the PSP hack: here's the interesting thing to think about.
Sony started from scratch to create a hardware platform for which only
they (and their authorized partners) could develop and deploy software.
They're not beginners at this; they've deployed similar security systems
already. (The PS One and the Playstation 2 both have copy protection
and region encoding, and Sony was also quite involved with DVD Video
security mechanisms.)
So it seems that an experienced company, with full control over
the hardware and no backwards compatability problems to deal with,
still can't create a platform for securely controlling the use and
distribution of digital information.
What does this say about the hopes of the "secure computing" initiatives
for PCs?
It seems to me that, if manufacturers can't control even their own
proprietary platforms, they haven't a hope of controlling standardised
ones.
