[ EEPI-Discuss ] Is DRM an aspect of the Apple switch to Intel chips?
As a hardcore Mac-user, let me be the millionth to cry out in horror. That being said, let's shed a little light on the DRM in Intel chips. First of all, DRM isn't nice and should be fought in every courthouse and legislative office. That being said, the DTCP-IP scheme that is in the newest Intel chips isn't without some merit. Now, before I'm drowned in a flood of flames, let me explain. DCTP-IP isn't a totally closed standard like, say, FairPlay, which is arguably a closed standard. Intel, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sony, and Panasonic are all in on it. According to me reading of the license statement, the founders of the standard are going to be pretty open with it and vow not to sue anyone using the standard to encrypt their goodies as long as it complies 100% with the standard. Even then, if it does not comply 100% with the standard (meaning 100% compatible with devices using the standard) content owners are given 30 days to get it together. So far, not TOOOOOO bad. It also states that content providers using the standard such as television or other broadcast (not including pay-per-view or other rental services) shall not impose unnecessary limitations that include purposely crippling the recording by forcing it to record a less than perfect digital representation. It also does not bar the use of analogue outputs on DTCP enabled devices. Of course, there are some issues with it that I really don't like, such as the No More Copies flag on audio data. Take this all with a grain of salt. I've only taken a brief look at the DTCP white papers so I may have missed some very important parts. However, compared with other DRM standards, this one isn't horrible. True FairPlay may be a little more lenient, but it isn't an open-ish standard. -- Joe McGuire aka Tinfoil Tinfoil Music - Digital Media and Music News http://music.tinfoil.net _______________________________________________ EEPI-Discuss mailing list information: http://lists.eepi.org/mailman/listinfo/eepi-discuss
