[ EEPI-Discuss ] Re: New "Star Wars" Film Already on the Internet

This seems very silly to me. On the one hand, "Hollywood" is
(rightfully) concerned about piracy of all digital versions of their
films; from DVDs to guerilla-style copies made by video-taping off the
screen. When the majority of the market gets its entertainment from
this "sector", there are no profits for the producers, of course.
This is obviously a big problem. Lots of PSA's in LA about this.
Lots of press about the studios' and filmmakers' concerns over this.

So, why then, on the other hand, is "Hollywood" perpetuating this
piracy and even worse, making it easier. The above article is just a
small example of what kind of problems we'll be facing in the future.
And this is before the widespread use of D-Cinema. Maybe I'm being
naive, but it seems to me that an entirely digital film
production/exhibition chain will make piracy much simpler and, not
only that, the quality of the pirated copies will be much better than
they are now. Why does "Hollywood" think it can have it both ways?
Seems like they're just shooting themselves in the foot.

Personally, I loathe piracy of both music and films. I don't have a
single copied CD or DVD in my posession and it takes all of my
willpower to keep myself from lecturing my friends who do download all
of their music for free. In fact, I almost don't even want to lend
any of my CDs to anyone because I know they'll just copy it!

At the moment, people who download movies seem like a minority and
copying DVDs is too technical for most people. But I imagine there
will come a time when that won't be the case. Sony released a 8 GB
DVD-burner last year, enough space to copy DVDs without using
additional compression.

It's not difficult to imagine the "progress" we will witness in the
coming years.

Stepping off of the soap-box...
